Blogging Idol Update: $3000 for the Winner, And Activate Your Feed Count

Update: I am starting to setup the Blogging Idol page, and I am noticing that a large number of participants still has not activated their Feedburner feed count (you find it under the Feedburner “Publicize” tab). You need to do this before July 1st to enter the competition, and must also put a link to your Feedburner feed on your blog, else I won’t be able to find it.

Yesterday I signed up for a monthly subscription over at Keyword Country. I have a new project coming up where I will need to mine a lot of data, and this looked like a good solution because it offers more information than what the standard keyword tools do.

Long story short, while exchanging some emails with the company to get some pre-sales information, I came to know their CEO. The guy is simply outstanding, and we immediately started talking about blogging and online marketing. He started reading some articles on Daily Blog Tips, liked them, and decided to sponsor the contest!

The cool thing is that he offered a life-time access to Keyword Country. The monthly subscription costs $49, so I set the value of a life-time deal at $1500. Combined with the previous prizes of $1500 it now will give the winner of blogging idol $3000.

Even if you are expecting to win the contest I encourage you to take a look at this tool. In the past I have used both WordTracker and WordZe, and Keyword Country just tops them, especially if you are trying to make money via AdSense. The tool basically lets you know the average PPC for each keyword, how many sponsors are bidding on it, the average number of monthly clicks and so on. The info they provide are also useful for SEO and AdWords purposes (e.g. you could use it to discover semantic terms related to your main keyword).

As for the blogging idol contest, we are already over 100 contestants. You still have 2 days to apply if you want to get involved. It will start on this next Tuesday, July 1st.

27 Definitions for “Blog”

Apart from laying down my own definition on that post, I also invited readers to elaborate and share theirs. Blogging is a social and recent phenomenon after all, meaning that my definition for it might be different from yours, and both of them be right.

Twenty seven readers decided to took the challenge (if I missed anyone please let me know) and to define what a blog is. Below you will find a quote from their answered, with a link to their own posts (make sure to check them out, I just included part of that they had to say on the matter).

1. http://www.rarst.net/

Blog is a site you are reading today.
Knowing it was written yesterday.
Expecting it to be written tomorrow.

2. http://www.andrewflusche.com/

Blogs enable the author to write lots of short, informative articles. I can categorize the articles, and they are all easily searchable. This allows my readers and clients to later find the information they need on my blog.

3. http://nimblecare.wordpress.com/

I think it is a platform for me:

-To express myself
-To share the experience I have
-To share the knowledge I have
-To learn from other people

4. http://karensouth.blogspot.com/

My blog is a chronological log or online diary of my life. Because blogs are easy to update and a great reference of what I have accomplished I tend to keep up with it a lot more than I did my website. Since a blog often reflects the personality of the author it is also a great way to get to know people who share the same interest as I do.

5. http://ezmarketingtool.com/

Blogs are simply software that makes it easy to get content onto the web. The modern “blog” is really just an easy to use “content management system” or CMS. Some blogs are hosted on individual hosting accounts just like “regular” static websites. These types of blogs carry the “responsibilities” of domain name registration, hosting and keeping the blogging software of choice up to date.

6. http://mayuonline.com/

A blog (a contraction of the term “Web log”) is a Web site, usually maintained by an individual, with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. “Blog” can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

7. http://loszieglerencanada.com/

8. http://info-architecture.blogspot.com/

Blogs are journals often authored by one individual, and sometimes teams. In the context of business communication, these are often used to talk with the marketplace and to join the conversation that existing external bloggers may be having.

9. http://infoqueenbee.blogspot.com/

Blog is a Website/Personal Online Journal, frequently/daily updated and the contents posted in Chronological order and are presented to the visitors in the reverse Chronological order. However links to the previous postings wherever necessary and relevant are given in the posts of blogging. Links to other blogs are also given wherever possible.

10. http://everydaythoughtsfromlife.blogspot.com/

Now that I have been writing for about 2 weeks I have come to find that blogging is a self-contained community that stretches around the world. Your blog is your window out to the world, so that everyone can see in to your hobbies, interests, and passions. Each blog has its own persona and mine is the nonsensical ramblings of the mind. This is one thing that interests me and now I get to share it with the world, and not only that but the world gets to comment and interact with me.

11. http://www.bloggingtune.com/

A blog is a space in the internet which an individual person/a group create to share their knowledge, offer opinions and provide service

12. http://broadcasting-brain.com/

Blogs are a combination of two well-known mainstream media outlets: the broadcasting studio and the traditional op-ed column.

13. http://spanish-podcast.com/

If I had to define what a blog is now, in 2008, I’d say that blogs are an early 21st-century version of the public town square. Humans have always had a need for social contact and for information and blogs provide a platform for both.

14. http://www.successmakingmachine.com/

It doesn’t matter. To someone who hasn’t heard of the concept it’s just a new/easy way for a person to publish content on the internet. That’s all you need to know.

15. http://www.janetbarclay.com

It pretty well goes without saying that a blog is a website, but the factors that make a blog different than other websites are as follows:

1. A blog is updated on a regular basis, with new content being added to previous content, rather than replacing it.
2. Even professional blogs have a personal side to them, often reflecting the individual(s) behind the business.
3. A blog allows for communication between the author and his or her readers, rather than just providing information.
4. Even business blogs aren’t 100% about promoting the company’s products and/or services.

16. http://knittsings.com/

For me the answer is straight forward. A blog allows me to share photos and information with anyone, anywhere, at anytime. This is especially important for those of us addicted to knitting machines yet isolated from others who share our passion.

17. http://fwdsend.typepad.com/

A blog is just another way of being heard (check out the cartoon here also).

18. http://blaiq.typepad.com/

Any sufficiently advanced blog will be indistinguishable from its blogger.

19. http://www.back-links.org/

A simplistic, evolutionary website which allows users to effortlessly express them selves, share their knowledge and advice throughout the internet, they adapt and evolve to meet the needs of the present.

20. http://pink-ink-pink.blogspot.com/

1. Instant readership and feedback. When I write freelance magazine articles, I finally see the fruits of my labor MONTHS later. In contrast, I can blog about something timely and see it online seconds later!

2. An online community. I have made many friends through blogging. I cannot believe how many writers I have “met” this way, and I’ve learned so much.

3. A fun creative outlet. I love experimenting and personalizing my blog and saying, “Here I am!” to the world.

21. http://gman-blog.blogspot.com/

22. http://www.se7enize.com/

Blog is
- not required to put personal aspect into it.
So that’s why there’re corporate/organization blogs
- not required to open to comment
So that’s why I still call kottke, daringfireball and many tumblelogs, a blog.
- not required to have other features such as ping/trackback, feed, etc.
- not required to be built with dynamic script (CMS)
I still call it a blog if it’s just .txt file published on internet, as long as it is updated the content in chronological order.
- not required to be updated regulary.
I still call it a blog, a dead blog though.

23. http://gotellnews.com/

A blog is a window for the reader to take a peek into the blogger’s life. Blogs can be informative, lively, and entertaining, business or personal.

24. http://techtites.com/

When it first began, a weblog or blog was a simple online diary, where the blog author would pen down his or her thoughts. It served as a means to let readers know primarily family and friends about the happenings in his / her life.

Over the years, blogs have evolved to much much more than that. While personal blogs are still far and wide across the blogosphere, you will find a lot of non-personal blogs as well.

Today, a blog is a platform for news, tutorials, travel tails, articles, video, photos and more. Blogs have several categories similar to what websites had several years ago. You have technology blogs, travelouges, personal blogs, news blogs, videologs, photoblogs etc.

25. http://stetoscope-blog.com/

As to me, a blog is an Exhibition-stand.

An exhibition-stand, is an open place designed to communicate messages and tht offers the option to have a one-t-one discussion with someone that represents the owner of the stand. You could notice that stands are sometimes very well-designed and sometimes quite cheap : just as blogs.

26. http://itlife.escrito.info/

Having been blogging for quite some time, I have come to identify that blogging is an obsession. A blog is a site where ideas and opinions are meshed together.

27. http://www.seanpaune.com/

I would say at this point that any site that conveys information in a chronological style format pretty much qualifies as a blog. Daniel stated things like comments and RSS feed would fall in his definition, but I have seen to many sites that meet the criteria of informational and chronological, and then miss one of the other two, that I’m not going to be quite as strict.

Blogging Idol 2: Accepting Applications (Win Over $4,000)

Update: The rules for the competition changed, so ignore this post. Instead read this one to see the current announcement.

All right guys, it is time for another Blogging Idol competition. On the first one we had over 100 competitors dueling to see who could gain more RSS subscribers in a period of four weeks. It is was fun, but I thought that perhaps we could focus on another aspect of blogging this time.

What is something that is always on the mind of bloggers and webmasters? Making money! And that is what Blogging Idol 2 is about. Competitors will need to create a brand new website for the competition, and they will have 6 weeks to make as much money as possible using Google AdSense. Every competitor will obviously keep the money he will make during this period, but the person with the highest profit figure will also win prizes worth over $4000 ($1000 of which in pure cash)!

The Competition

As I mentioned before, the competition will be structured around making money with Google AdSense. The reason for going with AdSense and not with any monetization method is twofold.

First of all many people consider AdSense to be one of the best ways to make money online, so it will be nice to discover what are the most efficient strategies around for this purpose.

Secondly it will also be easier to have a fair competition. Google has very strict policies for its AdSense publishers, so they should be able to track any suspicious behavior. Secondly, I don’t think people will want to cheat in the first place given that their AdSense account might get banned as a result. Finally, we will also have a better anti-cheating control this time that will use some Adsense features.

So overall this should be a great opportunity for the competitors to prove their money making skills and strategies, and for the readers to see how they will approach the challenge, what tactics will be used and so on.

I will personally try to follow all the competitors, and I will write detailed weekly reports with the highlights, interesting strategies, curious things and so on. You don’t want to miss it!

The Rules
1--Competitors can send an application from today until the midnight (Greenwich time) of October 30th

2--The competition will start on November 1st, and it will run until the midnight (Greenwich time) of December 15th

3--Every competitor will need to create a brand new website for the competition. They can start putting content on the website only on November 1st and after(Greenwich time)

4--Competitors can use a registered domain name, but there must not have been any content on that domain for the past year (else they could have an SEO advantage)

5-Competitors can use available domain names and free hosted services like Blogger.com

6--Each competitors can apply with only one website

7--All types of author-generated content websites are allowed (i.e., blogs and mini niche websites are allowed, while forums or social networking sites are not)

8--All types of promotional methods are allowed, except blackhat ones (i.e. no spamming, cheating, faking stats and so on)

9--Paid promotional methods are allowed but need to be communicated to me forehand, and these expenses will be detracted from the revenues (i.e., if a blogger spends $1000 in promotion and makes $1,300 in the end, his profit will be $300)

10--Competitors will need to have an AdSense account, and they will create an URL channel for the domain they intend to use. They will also need to send a weekly screenshot of their earnings (blurring the necessary fields to comply with Google’s ToS)

11--Competitors will need to have Google Analytics installed to cross check their numbers if needed
The competitors need to play under the Google AdSense program policies

12--Competitors will keep to themselves all the money earned during the competition
On December 15th, the competitor with the highest profit will be declared the winner
Send Your Application

13--The competition is open to anyone who is able to follow the rules mentioned above. You must have an AdSense account (or to get one before November 1st).

14--You can send your application via the contact form. Make sure to include your name and surname, and the domain of the website that you will be competing with.

I am looking forward to seeing you guys making some killer money!

How To Get A Logo For Your Site

Many people email me asking in what items they should invest money first for their blogs or websites. I usually reply stating that the domain/hosting package should always be the first priority. Once you have that covered, however, the logo becomes your next priority.

Using a free WordPress theme is not an issue in the beginning, but you should get the logo as soon as possible, because it will increase the credibility of your website and start building your online brand.

And the good news is that getting a professional looking logo is not hard nor expensive these days. There are basically four methods you can use, and I explain them in this article: 4 Ways To Get A Logo For Your Website.

The only method I left out is using a logo maker software or online tool, but that is because I don’t think the results you get here are worth your time or money.

Anyway check out the article if you are looking to get a new logo for your site.

The Webmasters Challenge: Starts November 10!

Once you build your first website (be it a blog or not), you become addicted to it. The process of researching a niche, finding a good domain, setting up a CMS, producing content and promoting it is a blast. Sure, it takes a lot of work, but it’s a lot of fun too.

Thinking about that I figured it would be cool to have a competition where people would duel to see who is the most skilled webmaster, and I decided to call it “The Webmasters Challenge.” If everything goes well it will start next Wednesday, November 10, so read on.
The Competition

The idea is simple: Participants will start a website from scratch, using an available domain name or one they already own but have never used, and they will compete over the next four months to see who can generate more profits with their websites.

Any type of website will be allowed, including mini/niche websites, blogs, forums, membership sites, online stores and so on.

The main rule is that no money can be spent other than on the domain and the shared hosting plan. So no paid advertising, no traffic or link purchases, and no money spent on products (e.g., ebook cover creation, software and so on).

Secondary rules are: no blackhat techniques can be used, competitors cannot use existing assets (e.g., established websites or email lists) to promote the new website, and the website itself can not be sold at the end of the competition to generate more profits.
The Prize: $1,000 Cash or More

I’ll be hosting the competition in partnership a hosting company, and the prize will be in proportion to the number of participants. For every 10 participants we’ll put $1,000 in cash as prize. So if 30 people participate the final cash prize will be $3,000. The winner will get 80% of that, and the runner-up 20%.

I’ll also be giving access to the Online Profits training program to all participants.
How To Participate

If you want to participate simply send an email to daniel@dailyblogtips.com, and I’ll reply with all the details. Notice that you may start researching your niche and domain name already, but you can’t register the domain or start building the website yet. I’ll make sure all the participants get started exactly in the same day, which is next Wednesday, November 10 (unless we need to postpone it by one week).
For Those Not Participating

Even if you are not participating I think you’ll enjoy the competition. You’ll be able to follow all the competing websites, checking what niches they will target, what business model they will use and so on.

I’ll publish biweekly updates too, highlighting the strategies used, and at the end of every month we’ll have a report with the numbers behind each website (e.g., traffic, profits and anything else relevant).

It should be fun, so stay tuned (and any help spreading the word is appreciated).

Blog Optimization Project

Do you think your blog could be optimized to achieve better results? The content is there but somehow the readers are not finding it? If so keep reading!

When I browse across the blogosphere I find many great writers that do not get the deserved attention (whether you measure attention in terms of traffic, RSS subscribers or sponsors). The content is there, but other aspects could be improved. Sometimes the design is poor, advertising is placed on the wrong spots or there is no search engine optimization at all.

The Blog Optimization Project is aimed at blogs that have potential but are not capitalizing it. Every Wednesday I will pick one blog among the applicants and throughout the week I will work with the blogger to optimize it. Here are some of the aspects that we will cover:

1--Blog design (visual aspects)
2--Blog layout (where to place buttons, RSS feed, etc.)
3--Search Engine Optimization
4--Promotion Techniques
5--Blogging Strategy
6--Monetization

I do not think that I have all the answers therefore I will also integrate other people (SEO experts, professional web designers and the like) into the projects whenever possible. After the blog is optimized I will publish a post with “Before” and “After” pictures and a list of the changes that we implemented. Hopefully it will provide an interesting reading for everyone.

In order to apply for the Blog Optimization Project you just need to send me an email through the Contact Form with the following information:

1--Name
2-Blog URL
3--Age of the blog
4--Daily page views
5--Objectives for the blog

Even if you are not picked immediately your blog will remain on the list of applicants. I am looking forward to working with you guys!

Blog Project: Blogging Mistakes

It is time for another blog project! On the first one we collected 30 traffic generation tips from 30 different bloggers, and the result was a pretty useful list. The new topic will be something different but equally interesting: blogging mistakes.

John Powell once said: “The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing”. That is the spirit of this blog project. I am pretty sure every blogger committed at least one mistake, whether it was related to the site design, to the domain name, to promotion techniques or search engine optimization. The important thing is to learn from them, and on this project we will hopefully learn not only from our mistakes but also from the ones other people committed so that we avoid those pitfalls.

Here are the rules to participate:

**  Write a post on your blog about one blogging mistake that you did on the past. Describe how the mistake affected your blog and how you managed to correct it. There are no limitations on the number of words so feel free to write a short or long post.

** Send an email through the Contact form with your name, post title and permalink of the post.

** After I publish the final list of entries you write a post on your blog linking to all of them.

The objective of this project is to collect some blogging tips, to allow people to discover and interact with new bloggers and to share the link love. As I mentioned on the first edition I always liked group writing projects, but one thing that I did not like was the fact that some selfish participants would receive backlinks and not link to other people.

That is why I inserted rule number 3, so that every participant agrees to link to every other participant. The mathematics behind it is pretty simple, if 50 people participate on the project you will write a post linking to 49 people and in exchange you will receive 49 backlinks.

Entries can be submitted until the midnight of next Sunday (April 1st) and the final list of entries will be published on the following Monday. I will also publish my entry later this week… man did I mess up the first time I installed WordPress.

Anyway I am looking forward for your blogging mistakes!

Blog Project: 30 Traffic Generation Tips

First of all a big “thank you” for every one who participated. As I said before the number of entries surprised me (and the quality as well, I will definitely apply some of those tips myself).

Now, without further delay, the 30 Traffic Generation Tips:

1. Sridhar Katakam
Keep track of blogs and leave comments on them. A good way to keep the conversation going is to install a MyBlogLog widget and visit the blog of people visiting your site.

2. Ian Delaney
Nothing creates long-term traffic more than value. Consider writing posts with resources or explaining how things work. Useful things get linked to and they get onto del.icio.us, which is far better long-term than a digg front page.

3. Scott Townsend
Inform search engines and aggregators like Technorati (using the ping functionality) when your blog is updated, this should ensure maximum traffic coming from those sources. (check the List of Ping Services)

4. Kyle
Simplify. Pay attention to complex issues in your field of work. It may be a big long publication that is hard to wade through or a concept that is hard to grasp. Reference it and make a shorter “for dummies” version with your own lessons learned and relevant tips. When doing this, I have been surprised to find that the simplified post will appear before the more complex version in search results. Perhaps this is why it results in increased traffic; people looking for more help or clarification on the subject will land on your blog.

5. Grant Gerver
Try to be polemic. I write obsessively about all-things political from the left-wing perspective in the form of humorous, sarcastic one-liners.

6. Daniel
A simple tip that will probably boost your page views: install a translator plugin. I decided to use a paid plugin for this, but if I am not wrong there are some free ones as well. The translation is not very good, as you can imagine, but it helps to attract readers that are not fluent in English.

7. Rory
Submit articles to blog carnivals (http://blogcarnival.com) that are related to your niche. Your article almost always gets posted, and it must generate a handful of visitors, at least.

8. Ramen Junkie
Newsgroups. I always see a spike when I post a review to a newsgroup.

9. Eric Atkins
Create a new design for your website. Not only will it be more attractive to your regular readers, but you can submit it to some CSS gallery showcase sites that feature great designs. This will give you exposure on those sites while generating a lot of traffic and backlinks from those types of sites.

10. Megan Taylor
Participate in conversations on related blogs. Start conversations on your own blog. Don’t just post about a story and leave it at that, engage your audience, ask questions and call to action.

11. Guido
Comment on blogs, write useful content and make good friends on forums.

12. Brian Auer
You must be active to generate traffic. I post comments on other blogs that are related to mine, and I post my site link in my signature at the forums. Spread the word about your blog and it will certainly attract readers.

13. Shankar Ganesh
Just browse around MyBlogLog.com and you will surely get visitors to your blog. Also try to join as many communities as possible that are related to your topic.

14. Andrew Timberlake
A great tip for generating traffic is off-line by including your url in all your off-line liturature from business cards, letterheads, pamphlets, adverts through in-store signage if applicable. I even have our website on my vehicle.

15. Cory OBrien
Read lots of other blogs. Leave trackbacks. Make sure your blog is optimized for search engines. Leverage social bookmarking sites like digg (both for new ideas and for traffic).

16. Jester
Leave comments on other blogs. If you’re already reading them, it takes
just a couple of seconds to leave a message agreeing or disagreeing
with the author, you get to leave a link to your site, and you will almost
ALWAYS get traffic from your comments.

17. Goerge Manty
Post 3-5 times a day. Use ping services like pingomatic or set up wordpress to ping some of the ping services. Engage your readers. Put up polls, ask them questions, give them quizes, free tools, etc. Make them want to come back and tell their friends about you.

18. Engtech
Community. It’s one word but it is the most important one when it comes to blogging. The only “blog metric” that makes sense is the vibrant community of readers it has. Building a community around your blog will bring you increased traffic, but how do you start? The boilerplate response to building traffic is always “SEO, social networking sites, and commenting on blogs” but it can be simplified to “be part of a community”. The easiest way to seed your blog is with an already existing community. But the only way to do that is to be part of the community yourself.

19. Chris
Squidoo Lenses are a good way to generate traffic. By using a lense,
you can generate your own custom “community” of webpages, including some
of the more popular pages in your “neighborhood.” Including your own
webpage in such a list is a good way of generating traffic.

20. Splork
I’ve had good success writing articles and submitting them to EzineArticles. Articles that have been written from well-researched keyword phrases and accepted by EzineArticles tend to rank very high in Google for that search term. Placing anchor text in the footer of those articles so the reader can visit my relevant website has always increased my site traffic.

21. Jen Gordon
I came upon some unexpected traffic when my blog popped up on some css design portals like www.cssmania.com and www.webcreme.com. If you can put some time into the concept behind and design for your blog, I’d recommend submitting your site to a design portal not only for
additional traffic but to build an additional community around your site.

22. Kat
I’ve recently gotten involved with several “MySpace-like” community sites that focus on my target audience. I share my thoughts in their forums, post intros to my real blog on their system blog and I’ve even created a group for my specific niche. It’s been very, very successful for me.

23. Inspirationbit
Well, obviously everyone knows that social bookmarking sites like Digg, del.icio.us, etc. bring lots of traffic. But I’m now submitting some of my articles to blogg-buzz.com (a digg like site for bloggers), and I always get not a bad traffic from there.

24. Mark Alves
Participate in Yahoo Answers and LinkedIn Answers where you can demonstrate your expertise, get associated with relevant keywords and put your URL out there.

25. Tillerman
Be the first to write a post about the ‘Top Ten Blogs’ in your niche. The post will rank highly in any general search for blogs in your niche and other bloggers in your niche write about the post and link to it.

26. Nick
Participating in forums is a great way to get loyal readers. Either link baiting people in your signature or posting great advice and tips will give you high quality traffic, which will result in return visitors.

27. Brandon Wood
A simple trick I’ve used to increase traffic to my blog is participate in group writing projects. In fact, that’s what I’m doing right now.

28. Alan Thomas

Don’t forget your archives. I just posted a roundup of all interviews I did over the past seven months. One of them generated a new link and a big traffic spike from a group of users that look like they will be loyal readers now.

29. KWiz
Write something controversial. I don’t think it’s good to write something controversial just for the purpose of getting traffic necessarily (especially if it’s only for that purpose and you’re being disingenuous), but it works.

30. Dennis Coughlin
Find the best blogs on your niche and contact the authors. Introduce yourself and send a link of your blog. This might help them to discover your blog, read it and possibly link to it.

Blog Project: Traffic Generation Tips

I have always been a fan of Darren Rowse’s group writing projects (I was very lucky to be among the winners of the last edition, in fact). The only problem I have ever encountered there is that some of the participants are exclusively interested in getting a backlink from Problogger. They do not interact with the other people or link to posts from other blogs.

In order to solve this problem I will try to create a monthly Blog Project here at Daily Blog Tips with two simple rules:

1. Send me your tip about the current topic (the first one will be “Traffic Generation Tips”). You can use the contact form or post a comment below.

2. After I publish the list of participants and their tips you write a post with a link to everyone that participated in the project.

The aim of this project is to share useful tips, spread the link love and give everyone the possibility to discover new blogs. If 10 people participate you will receive 10 tips, link to 10 people and get 10 backlinks in exchange (sounds good, right?).

As I mentioned before the first topic is “Traffic Generation Tips”, so share what has worked to increase your traffic over the past. You can send your tips until Sunday, February 3rd.
